As we enjoy the longest days of the year, floodlights would normally be the last topic of conversation. This year however, we are able to announce the arrival of the new LED lights. After many years service, the old sodium lights have been replaced by the latest lighting technology.
Since modern LEDs use very little electricity in comparison to the old lights it was possible to just replace the light heads without major expense. In fact, most passers-by are unlikely to notice the difference.
It is hoped that a brighter and whiter light will make tennis a bit easier to play at the beginning and end of the season.
Once again the bi-annual American Tournament was great success with Town Green club members enjoying good weather for the afternoon. Julian organised the event and at the end of the days tennis awarded the prizes to the winners!
The next social event at Town Green is the American Tournament which Julian traditionally organises at the beginning of each season. This year it will be held on Sunday 30th April and will commence at 2pm.
It’s an excellent way for new members to try their hand as players rotate partners so that all players get the chance to play with partners of different ability. It’s also a great level playing field which suits players of all ages and abilities.
There will be prizes for winners and runners-up with light refreshments available. Assuming good weather it is anticipated that the Tournament will end about 5pm. If you want to sign up please contact Julian via firstname.lastname@example.org
Our opening club night was blessed with dry though somewhat blustery weather as we got into our stride for the season. It was good to see that a number of prospective tennis players joined us for the evening and hopefully they will have been encouraged to visit us again.
Now the season starts in earnest with teams preparing for the start of fixtures in the Southport and Liverpool leagues. Last Thursday the mens team had a fine evening and got nearly two hours of practice without needing to use the floodlights.

It was interesting to see that the first floodlight on the third court had already been converted to LED. It’s not easy to see, but the old sodium light fitting has been removed and replaced. Such is the technology nowadays, the new LED lights don’t actually look like lights at all. Hopefully the weather will allow the conversion of the remaining lights before matches begin.
We have started getting ready for first Club night and are making preparations for the evening. As always, there is a warm welcome for non members to come along and join us to play some tennis and enjoy the refreshments.
Bill will be on hand to give some coaching tips and we will have a selection of racquets and balls if you don’t have your own equipment.
Keep an eye out for our new poster which will be seen around and about the Club in the next few days!
Five junior camps have been provisionally agreed. These will be once again run by Bill Dow who takes the popular junior Saturday morning sessions. These are open to non members.

These are provisional with more information to follow nearer the dates!
February might seem very early to be discussing plans for summer tennis – but it is a key month in the local tennis calendar. Work starts in earnest when Town Green representatives attend both the Southport and Liverpool Tennis Group fixture meetings where our teams play league tennis. Then Clubs will host their own Committee meetings to organise events, purchase balls and agree court time for the season.
The first three confirmed dates are always first club night, coaching and our early season American Tournament and once we have these agreed it feels like the season is underway. This year the dates are
Coaching – usual format with Bill’s popular Saturday mornings starting 1st April
First Club Night – our curtain raiser for the season will be at 7pm on the 11th April
American Tournament – to be held at 2pm on Sunday 30th April
These dates have only just been announced and there will be plenty more information in the very near future.
Liz has confirmed the booking for the Town Green Tennis Club Christmas Dinner!
It will be on Tuesday 6th December 7pm at the Toby Carvery in Ormskirk.. The £13.49 menu (which is excellent value) is copied below.
Please let Liz know if you can make it as numbers have to be confirmed by the 15th November.
Did you know that our U3A tennis players also play during the winter? They can usually be found on Court between 10 and 12 most Wednesdays and Fridays, unless as they say its “teeming” down.
They have a break over the Christmas and New Year period from about mid December to mid January, but apart from that will be found hitting balls down at the Winifred Lane Courts in Aughton.
They are always interested in meeting new tennis players who might want to join in and will look forward to seeing new faces. Interested? – then please get in touch or simply go down and introduce yourself!
If you are new to the area and still finding your way around Ormskirk and Aughton we can be found behind the Aughton Village Hall car park on Winifred Lane. If you drive through the car park, the tennis courts can be found directly in front of you. Sat Nav might not give you an accurate location!
